The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) is one of the two payment tracks created under The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA). MIPS adjusts payment based on performance in four performance categories: Quality, cost, promoting interoperability (PI), and improvement activities. MIPS was designed to tie payments to quality and cost-efficient care, drive improvement in care processes and health outcomes, increase the use of healthcare information, and reduce the cost of care.
